Zabargau Apple Tree
Introduced: 1885, Germany
One of the largest of the russets, this apple is bronze patched and streaked over a green background. It’s a dense apple, crunchy and aromatic. The flavor when harvested is intense and sweet-sharp, but mellows in storage, developing a balanced sweetness that has the rich nuttiness we expect from a good russet. It will store well and has found favor with some American cider makers for its aromatic qualities.

Apple Tree Notes:
Plant where trees will get sun for most of the day in a well drained soil. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots, don’t add fertilizers or compost when filling the hole, save those for a top-dressing once the tree leafs out. Always protect your new trees with a “mouse guard” either a wrap from a garden center or a tube made from hardware cloth. Apple trees set better crops when at least two different varieties are planted for cross pollination.
